511 Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition American Modernists: A Private Collection. The exhibition is of thirteen major works by early to mid-twentieth-century American Modernists, including members of the American Abstract Artists group of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s.
Included in the exhibition is an important conte crayon drawing by
Edward Hopper, Woman at a Sewing-Table (circa 1921), which was prelude to a painting by the artist of the same subject, now in the von Thyssen Bornemisza Collection in Madrid; the large, early painting by
Ralston Crawford, Roof, 31 West 11th Street (1934); and the rare portrait by
Walt Kuhn, Three Cornered Hat (1943), a painting from the period of Kuhn’s circus and vaudeville portraits.
Crawford’s painting is included in William C. Agee’s definitive book on the artist’s work,
Ralston Crawford. The Kuhn painting was included in the 1987 exhibition,
Walt Kuhn: The Entertainers at The Whitney Museum of American Art. Also in the exhibition is an anonymous watercolor and gouache on board, American School 20th century, that appears to be a finished study for a vast mural on America’s westward expansion.
The other paintings in the exhibition are by Crawford,
Raymond Jonson,
Francis Criss,
Giorgio Cavallon,
John Bradley Storrs,
Patsy Santo, and
Bumpei Usui. All the works are framed, many in original frames of the period.
An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, April 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., to which the public is invited.
