“The major reason why I am drawn to and obsessed with cartoons, video games and science fiction is that they create a space for us to enter, to use our imaginations and play.”
The young painter Brian Gershey makes landscapes of pop and near-psychedelic forms that use cartooning and video game iconography to create imaginary spaces. In Tai Wingee’s Search for Bestpin, a robotlike shape appears to be traveling through toxic clouds in a puce and fuscia-colored “sky”. The abstraction is a cartoon but also a direct reference to our physical and social landscape. Gershey’s ambiguous forms are mind-fantasies --places of surprise, playfulness, and yet safety as well.
Brian Gershey received his BFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art and is an MFA student at School of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Tufts University. His recent exhibitions include North American Print Biennial at Boston University’s Gallery 808; Cartooning Abstraction at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston; and Trickle Down at The Firehouse Gallery in Burlington, Vermont. The artist received a Dana Pond Award in painting, as well as an Award for Excellence in printmaking from the Museum School. This is Gershey’s first exhibition in New York.
