511 Gallery is pleased to present Drawing Now, an exhibition of contemporary drawings by nine emerging and established artists reflecting the enormous diversity of drawing today. This group show represents varying approaches to the process of drawing by sculptors, painters, installation artists, and artists for whom drawing is a major medium of expression. Several of the artists use the traditional tools of drawing, such as graphite, crayon, and charcoal, while others employ tape, collage, brush, razors, and other unusual implements to make their marks or gestures. Surfaces also vary among the artists: works on paper, vellum, painted canvas, wood, and velvet are in the show.
Drawing Now includes the minimalist white-on-white Agnes Martin Obituary Project of
Karen Schiff and the minimalist pale pastel works of French-Canadian artist Stephan LaRue; the figurative charcoal and chalk studies for paintings of
Bryan LeBoeuf and the charcoal and crayon figures of
Viviane Silvera (both artists trained at New York Academy of Art's School of Figurative Art); the architectural deconstructions of
Caitlin Masley; the ink and brush watery cartouches of Wendy Lehman; the "ideas for objects" by sculptor
Jennifer Odem; icons abstracted onto paper by
Matt Ernst; sublime landscapes of charcoal, ink, and erasure by Jason Buchanan; sexual narratives concealed behind Baroque ornaments drawn by Michael Mogavero; and drawings cut into velvet by the young Greek conceptual artist Maro Michalakakos.
In the gallery's West Space will be shown the new mountain topographical drawings of Scottish artist
Lesley Punton.
