Marina City #5

Caitlin Masley’s Marina City #4 project, which consists of a large wall drawing and several related works on paper, deconstructs a work of architecture—Chicago’s famed Marina City towers—into its molecular structure and basic physical components. The result is a mural projection on the gallery wall, in which the underlying “DNA” of the building has been exploded, then layered and recombined into a new organic entity with attendant multiple forms.
Masley’s practice has been to explore architecture (using photography, drawing, and computer graphics software) “as a modal conception.” She is seeking an “architecture of possible worlds that would spur on a reconsidered organic architecture that would grow to suit the needs of the landscape and its inhabitants.” Through the work, the artist asks why we must accept the traditional static model of an architectural work when advanced mathematics, genetics, and computer science make possible evolutionary design and growth, even in structures made of brick, cement, steel, and glass. If applied to urban planning and the design of buildings, this new consideration might result in community structures that could grow and evolve as the community and its needs changed. Later this year, Masley will exhibit Passage, her photomural work, with New York City’s Economic Development Corporation on Main Street in Flushing.
Caitlin Masley has exhibited at Gallerie 5, in Denmark; in Up & Coming, curated by Sylvia Chivaratanond at ARCO, Madrid; at DUMBO Arts Festival and Artists Space in New York; and in galleries in Denmark, Germany, and England. In 2005, her Caitlin Masley Artist project was featured in Cabinet Magazine. Awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship in 2002, at Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, and residencies in Salzburg, Berlin, and Trondheim, Norway, the artist now lives in New York.
