529 W 20th StThese new large paintings by Scottish artist Lesley Punton are intense and minutely detailed graphite drawings on sanded oil-paint-on-canvas, of forests, mountains, rivers, and cities. With a minimalist sensibility and treatment of line as both outline and "filled in" spaces, Punton's landscapes take on the quality of emergent palimpsests, finely drawn natural and human-made structures that seem to surface through the sanded paint of their own accord. Although these works describe specific sites and objects, the paintings seem to "wash" over the entire canvas with an all-over quality that makes for an impression of the boundary-less sublime. Though similar to each other in format and method of execution, the works vary considerably. The works in the series Cities, for instance, appear as if aerial views, topographies of crowded lines and shapes that signify the density of urban existence. Mountains, by contrast, mark out craggy peaks and rounded domes from white space that surrounds them; the mountains seem to resemble tidal waves and ocean curls in their tight networks of lines, their interstices or pauses. Forests, again differing from the other series of works, manifest an India ink-like effect and recall the Eastern artmaking tradition of thin brushstroke scenes and narratives on scrolls or parchments.
In prior exhibitions, Punton has shown black-and-white photographs, and one can surmise that the lens-based work ultimately led the artist into this new form and practice.
Lesley Punton has exhibited her paintings and photographs at galleries in London, Scotland, Germany, Sweden, Italy, and Czechoslovakia, and has been the recipient of numerous awards and commissions from the Scottish Arts Council, Fotofeis, the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Academy, London. The artist lives and works in Glasgow, where she is on the faculty of the Glasgow School of Art. This is her first U.S. solo exhibition.
