798 Avant Gallery is pleased to present Midnight News, a solo exhibition by the poignantly provocative Chinese artist
Wang Jinsong. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition at
798 Avant Gallery. Midnight News is a new series of conceptual photographs based on the Midnight News on China Central Television, the major broadcast television network in Mainland China.
Born in 1963,
Wang Jinsong graduated from the prestigious yet traditionally rigorous Hangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 1987 where he focused primarily on the art of ink painting. Applying his skill with ink to oil painting he rose to international recognition in the late 80’s as a member of the Cynical Realists. Looking to explore the use of alternative mediums, Jinsong put down his brush in the early nineties and began experimenting with installation works, performances, and photography, as a means of expressing his view on the cultural climate of China. Regardless of his choice of medium Jinsong continues to capture the quiddity of modern Chinese people and their relationship to the social fluctuations of Chinese culture.
Wang Jinsong’s new work, Midnight News, is a series of thirty photographs, taken one per minute during a thirty minute broadcasting of the midnight news. In an age where information is available in greater quantities than ever before, the television as a source of insight into the events of the world is abandoned in an unremarkable alley; yet it plays on into the darkness of night. Nothing changes save the images on the screen, each a glimpse of the global news. Like Jinsong’s Standard Family, Midnight News is more of a statement of fact than a measure of personal commentary. These are the images approved by the government and broadcast to the masses, yet not a single soul is watching. Turned on, tuned in, and left alone in a nation of roughly one billion people the importance, power, and relevance of the popular midnight news is thrown into question.
