A Collaborative Work
Francie Shaw and Bob Perelman
This is the first piece I have done where a major part of the process occurred on the computer. It has been fascinating and fun and I think it works well for the mesmerizing, changing phrases of the poem. But the history of this piece goes way back to the days before computers and even much video to 1978 in San Francisco. It was originally done as a performance work at Langton Arts. (then 80 Langton Street). It was later done in NYC and Santa Rosa, CA.
It started with the idea of making lines from the shapes of ocean waves, turning them into both a visual and a poetic line, an incantation. In that incarnation of the piece, I shot a roll in black and white Super 8 of the waves at Ocean Beach. I then prepared a long roll of white butcher paper (36’’ wide) with some wave lines of various blues and greens, interspersed with much untouched white paper. For the performance I hung the prepared roll on the wall. In a dark room, Bob sat at the whirring projector, which was centered on a section of the roll and read the poem by the light of the projector. As he read, I painted “wave” lines on the roll in black ink, then pulled more paper down and drew again. Occasionally Bob would freeze the image and I would trace the actual wave line on the paper. As this went along, more and more white wave-marked paper flowed out toward the audience in billows until the poem was finished.
Bob published the poem in his selected works Ten to One in 1999 (Wesleyan Press). I have always especially loved the poem and I realized I had an opportunity to envision it in another way, more permanent but not performative. I took many digital photos of waves. I drew and then scanned many ink lines into the computer. Then I played. These 10scrolls are the first part of that effort. There are so many interesting possibilities with digital printing, changing size being one of the most obvious. For part 2, we will follow this with a limited edition book from Whalecloth/KS Press.
