BETWIXT AND BETWEEN,
A.I.R. Gallery 2007-2008 Fellowship Award Recipient
Megan Biddle’s first solo exhibition of drawings and installation work, will be on view at A.I.R. from May 29 – June 23, 2007. The opening reception will be held May 31, from 6–8 PM.
In BETWIXT AND BETWEEN,
Megan Biddle presents a hybrid of abstract wall drawings, installation, and sculpture, all inspired by naturally occurring phenomena and geological formation.
Materials such as blown glass, plaster, and film all serve to inform Biddle’s desire to instill her work with a sense of wonder. Biddle writes that using these materials, “allows my imagination to float between different worlds and to make sense of what those unknown places manifest.” The transformation of these materials from one substance to another is key to Biddle’s artistic process. She relaxes her control over the end results and lets the process itself be her guide. The artist welcomes the notion that discoveries are made when materials behave unexpectedly, making the final work distinctive from what was originally planned.
The abstract forms of BETWIXT AND BETWEEN are drawn primarily from accessible materials and personal spaces. Biddle uses a systematic approach of magnification and repetition to transform these textures into otherworldly landscapes and topographical maps. The video “Skin Flicks” was produced by directly printing the surface of the artist’s skin onto blank super 8 film, then transferring it to video. Similarly, the drawing “West Clay Street” is a recording of cracks that appeared on the artist’s bedroom wall during the three years she lived in a house in Richmond, VA. By shifting between scales, Biddle’s invented terrains lose all direct reference to original source. In this manner, she has succeeded in moving from the familiar and figurative into the realm of abstraction, bringing personal and even intimate spaces into a visual language.
Megan Biddle received her M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work has been exhibited domestically and internationally at establishments as diverse as The Painting Center, The Brick Theater, The 700IS Experimental Film Festival in Iceland, and Galerie VSUP in Prague. Biddle is currently an artist in residence at the BCAT/Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn.
