A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, Figments of the Ordinary Life, by
Betsy Alwin. This exhibition of drawings, sculpture and installation will be on view from October 11 to November 4, 2006. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 12, from 6pm to 8pm.
Through their reconstructive energies the works in Figments of the Ordinary Life offer the possibility of reconciling the vernacular with the extraordinary. When assembling this body of work Alwin re-harvested commonplace materials, specifically those of the domestic nature. In each piece, the materials were chosen for their properties as possible generators, catalysts and conductors. By combination and modification, the values of household items are reexamined as the objects are made to perform new functions. In the installation Opus, grocery bags become gardens that generate sound.
In Constellation a peep through the window of a stove door-turned space satellite reveals a tiny portion of the night sky that is powered by canned fruit. By harnessing the latent energies of peaches and potatoes Alwin reveals her homespun ingenuity. In Figments of Ordinary Life, Alwin’s installations are metaphors of interconnectedness between objects and the incorporeal.
