Gallery I: NightVision, a series of photographs and video pieces by
Sheila Ross, engages three paths to awareness. In Hear, Ross expresses our divided state as we look inwards and outwards, so seldom unifying in the present moment. In JumpStart (video) a woman finds herself in a featureless void. Reacting to her lack of context she makes stuttering attempts to jumpstart herself, trying one strategy after another to free herself from the single frames of the video. This work originated in a series of photographs taken by Ross of Minich at the MacDowell Colony in 1988, when they had concurrent fellowships . This show is part of the MacDowell Centennial—celebrating 100 years of giving artists freedom to create.
