One True Thing
February 6, 2007- March 3, 2007
Reception: February 8, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
511 W 25th St
Curated by
A.I.R. Gallery’s former director Dena Muller, ONE TRUE THING illustrates the gallery’s long–standing commitment to sustaining the creative processes and individual voices of women artists. The nineteen artists in the show state that one of the main benefits of belonging to A.I.R. is the freedom it affords them to make work that is “true” to their most essential sensibility as studio artists.
A full color catalogue accompanies the exhibition. In it Muller states — “Through a curatorial process that mirrors the artist-run nature of the gallery, each artist was asked to define the “one true thing” in (her) art making and in participation at A.I.R. The images in the exhibition represent the work that best illustrates each artist’s expression of this concept . . . As with most collaborations at A.I.R., what started as a disparate and varied gathering coalesced into a visual statement made cohesive by unexpected denominators.”
ONE TRUE THING coincides with the beginning of the year–long Feminist Art Project, a project in which
A.I.R. Gallery was a founding member. The purpose of the Feminist Art Project is to bring public attention to women artists’ significant impact on contemporary art practice, highlight their international influence, and guarantee their inclusion in the cultural
record, past, present, and future.
