A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce, Under Cover of Trees, a solo exhibition of new work by combined-media artist
Barbara Roux. The exhibition will be on view from January 8th to February 2nd, 2008. The Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, January 10th from 6pm to 8pm.
Under Cover of Trees is an installation based on Roux’s work as an ecology-based artist and conservationist. The exhibition contains photographic images of temporary site-specific projects she creates in the woods, combined with sculptural elements made up of forest materials and narrative texts by the artist.
The works in Under the Cover of Trees focus on habitat niches that are strong yet vulnerable, dark yet enduring. Often these pieces mirror human conditions and events. Symbolic of her concerns for the preservation of native habitats, images of hand held glass houses and a flower bird recur in Roux’s work. Of her system of organic symbols, Roux writes: “My use of the cut glass house shape to reflect the forest and wetland directly engages the land into my work and eludes to the way development has caused wild species to disappear and to be replaced by suburban mansions. The birds I create in the forest from flower petals are ephemeral and hopeful metaphors for renewal and a struggle for survival.”
Barbara Roux received her M.F.A. in Combined-Media Art from C.U.N.Y., Hunter College. She has exhibited her work at museums, universities and galleries throughout the East. At present she has two solo shows at other venues, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, CT and the C.U.N.Y. Queens College Art Center in Flushing, NY. Her ecology-based art has been the focus for articles in a number of publications. Her photograph Wetland Myths will be featured as the cover of Orion Magazine this winter. A small fold book by the artist titled Under Cover of Trees accompanies this exhibition.
