WALKING @ AGAIN,
Joan Snitzer’s solo exhibition of new paintings, will be on view at A.I.R. from May 29 – June 23, 2007. The opening reception will be held May 31, from 6–8 PM.
The paintings in WALKING @ AGAIN – both works on paper and canvas - are studies of events and outcomes of the diverse implementations of forms found in modern art practice.
Joan Snitzer combines the complex yet subtle layering of various painterly mediums, spare collage components and photographic elements to deftly merge modes of abstraction and conceptual art with surprising freshness.
Employing collections of graphic codes, photographic moments, grid formations and painterly textures, Snitzer makes use of the physical and illusionist nature of the painting medium itself. The artist says: “These forms, gestures, references and staged painterly events are intended to codify places, incidents and even moods of the natural and fabricated world.”
Contained in paintings like “Basketball, 2007” are fields of observation ranging from the richly textured, dense and oblique to the transparent. Snitzer’s unique techniques of layering seem to leave nothing behind except for traces of a few contemplative moments. The graphite black and rich, bright colored ovals which punctuate the paintings add additional layers of depth, both in dimension and emotion. The overall success of the works in this exhibition lays in the artist’s communication of a lyrical challenge through the layering and mapping of elements, sensations and messages. The complexity of each work’s causes and occurrences exemplifies
Joan Snitzer’s facility at bringing new life to the realm of abstraction.
Joan Snitzer received her M.F.A. from Hunter College. She is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of the Visual Arts at Barnard College/Columbia University as well as a critic and curator.
