ACA Galleries is pleased to announce its first exhibition of paintings by Doug Safranek. A full color catalogue of the exhibition is available with a statement on technique by the artist and an essay by noted author Jane Schwartz.

Safranek’s intricately detailed paintings depict the diverse neighborhoods, inhabitants and cultures of New York City. Often miniature in scale they celebrate the immensity and variety of the urban landscape.

Born in 1956, he attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he studied painting with professors John Wilde and James Watrous. When he graduated in 1984 with a Masters of Fine Arts Professor Watrous presented Safranek with his collection of powdered pigments some of which had once belonged to the renowned tempera painters John Steuart Curry and Thomas Hart Benton.

His work can be found in many public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of the City of New York; New York Historical Society, New York, NY; Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, AK; Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA; Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, Spokane, WA and Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including: Silver Medal, Painting Division, Greater Spokane Arts Festival, 1979; WARF Graduate Fellowship at University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1980-81; Marie Kohler Fellowship, University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1981-84; Elizabeth Greenshield’s Grant, Montreal, 1986; University of Connecticut at Storrs, Visiting Artists Lecture, 1989 and E.D. Foundation Award, New York, 1995.

Also on view will be Masters of Tempera a group exhibition featuring, Isabel Bishop, Aaron Bohrod, Paul Cadmus, Jared French, Joe Jones, Jules Kirschenbaum, Reginald Marsh, Ben Shahn, Charles Sheeler, George Tooker, Robert Vickrey and Andrew Wyeth among others.
