ACA Galleries is delighted to announce its first exhibition of works by
Edmund Yaghjian. This show is part of a traveling exhibition organized by the South Carolina State Museum. A full color catalogue is available with essays by Sharon Campbell, Paul Matheny and Robin Waites.
At the age of 3,
Edmund Yaghjian immigrated with his family from Harpoot, Armenia to Providence, RI. He moved to New York City in 1930 and attended the Art Students League where he became close friends with John Sloan and Stuart Davis.
In 1945 he became the first head of the art department at the University of South Carolina. He was instrumental in bringing a level of professionalism to the department and encouraging the development of the arts in the community and across the region.
Throughout his career he painted his surroundings. But his style continually shifted from realism to stylized abstraction to nonobjective work. This exhibition will include representative work from his long career.
