The
Allen Gallery is pleased to present : A Second Skin, an exhibition of paintings by
Jennifer Mazza and
Michael Delaney.
A Second Skin is a show dealing with figurative work that digresses from the traditional approach and style of figurative painting. Delaney and Mazza offer contrasting perspectives to the human form by playing with composition and size. Both artists entice the viewer by emphasizing the curvature of the body and the sensuality of the figure and cause us to examine the human body in a new light.
Jennifer Mazza's paintings expose the rawness of the human figure by using layers of paint to create texture and to provide the illusion of exposed flesh. This is not only aesthetically interesting, but it also provokes questions of a deeper message of the subject's emotional core. The figures provide an intimacy that is not often achieved in traditional painting, by focusing on small portions of each subject. They force the viewer to examine the gesture being depicted in each piece and translate it into their own personal emotions.
Michael Delaney's figure paintings are influenced by a variety of artists coming together like sounds in and orchestra. His inspiration runs from the sculptures of Greece and Rome, to the painters of the Italian renaissance, to Caravaggio and Velasquez, and to Modigliani and Nerdrum. Delaney strips his pieces down to a state of simplicity, where the truth of the moment and unhidden reality are allowed to surface. My composing his pieces with solitary figures, the subject can express the idea of uninhibited emotion to the viewer. Delaney also uses Japanese artwork as inspiration to suggest the subconscious human desire for order. Film also inspires a similar order, with respect to the square shapes. In addition to his art,
Michael Delaney is studying as an operatic tenor, which often intertwines with his artwork.
