Allen Gallery is pleased to announce the New York solo exhibition debut of photographer
Matthew Clowney, titled "Families" will be on view at
Allen Gallery from October 4th through November 1st, 2007.
Working collaboratively across the United States with families in their own domestic spaces,
Matthew Clowney draws on the traditions of family portraiture and tableau to build his playful and contemplative images. In this terrain of constructed theatricality, even
household pets cooperate by performing stunts unprovoked. The images scratch at the edge between reality and fiction with a subtle yet persistent strangeness.
Matthew Clowney is an award-winning photographer with works in numerous collections both private and public, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington,
DC, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia.
Shortly after receiving a BFA in 1995 from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia,
Matthew moved to New York City, where he assisted Tina Barney for 8 years before pursuing an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design.
