Allen Gallery is pleased to announce Spectrum, an exhibition of works by Kate Gore and Colin Thompson.
Gore, born in Memphis, Tennessee, creates her multi-dimensional works through layers of plaster on canvas, which provide a surface to etch into. Of her work, Gore says, “There is a certain place and time in my life that I revisit when I paint, delving into the conflicting and sometimes painful aspects of childhood. I use my paintings literally to wrestle with the past. I incorporate fragments of things remembered, the tile in my elementary school, the color of my grandmother’s kitchen, text from nursery rhymes and stories, to trigger a link with the past. Diagrams, wallpaper patterns and animal forms are more easily identified, while the surface they embellish may not be, generating layers that are clear and oblique. The combination of these two elements, the obvious and the obscured, charge the paintings with contradictions, forcing the viewer to investigate what is hidden and what is revealed.”
Thompson, was born in London, England and received his MFA from Yale. In his work, Thomson looks to mid-century design to create brashly patterned abstractions; they mirror and then still the shifting tumult of images emblematic of our virtual age. Thompson believes that the most important skills for an artist are clear thinking and a sense of humor. Without either, developing a compelling image becomes a risky occupation full of missed opportunities and false starts. He starts with a drawing, followed by watercolor. He says, “With drawing in hand, next up is watercolor; a what if. What if this were blue? What if the ground were pink? There’s more in play here once you leave the white page of the drawings. How much information is needed to develop a believable structure, or how that structure can be built out of color are normal questions that I answer in an intuitive way.”
