Heat
June 14, 2005- August 31, 2005
540 W 29th St
This blazing exhibition assembles works by major and emerging artists whose work in painting, photography and video presents the complex facets of “heat”.
Sensuality and erotic fervor emanates from works by
Nan Goldin and Picasso.
David Salle offers the viewer a sultry juxtaposition of desire and indifference.
The kinetic energy created by the frantic abstraction of
Iva Gueorguieva is contrasted in the pictorial illusion of
Lyle Starr’s controlled and precise layering of images. A candle melting under a shimmering flame is depicted on
Donald Baechler’s thickly collaged surface.
Randy Wray constructs warmth and intensity by depicting “psychic architectures” with glowing color.
A provocative painting by
Keith Haring from 1984 presents a self-portrait as a monster engulfed in flames.
Lori Nix’s photographed miniature model creates a scene of impending doom, with happy campers oblivious to the raging forest fire about to overtake them. In his video,
Pawel Wojtasik captures the destructive beauty of fire.
Whereas each individual work deals with the subject of “heat” on its own terms, the cohesiveness of this exhibition immerses the viewer in such pictorial intensity that the temperature of a New York summer pales by comparison.
