“A Dance-like Sequence:” A sequential installation of acrylic-shaped
canvas constructions derives from multiple lateral views of a single,
unflexing modular sculpture comprised of four congruent isosceles right
triangles.
In October
Amos Eno Gallery will present a full gallery installation
of the dance-like suite of acrylic-shaped canvas constructions by
Charleen Kavleski. Although the paintings may be viewed all at once,
they are meant to be looked at in numbered order from one to another in
a display of seeming stop-action movement.
Her installed flat, illusionistic painted constructions have their
origins in rotational, lateral views of a single, unflexing, modular
sculpture comprised of four congruent isosceles right triangles.
Personage qualities are the result of playful selections from these
views showing extension and compression as one might see in dancing
figures.
Sequence and suites of shaped canvas constructions in installation
have grown out of the artist’s combined experiences: her early
independent systematizations which she used in sculpture and which
preceded an interest in palpable, systemic Conceptual Art, and family
histories of mason work and quiltmaking both of which employed modules.
She has approached her work with the intention of designing object
oriented, expressive variants of Conceptual Art.
Charleen has been an exhibiting member of the National Association of
Women Artists since 1992 and has been included in Who’s Who in American
Art since 1995. Her work (in more than 130 group and juried shows) has
been selected by a variety of art world luminaries for display in
galleries and museums throughout the United States. Among them are:
Ann Temkin, Charlotta Kotik, Irving Sandler, Ned Rifkin, Patterson
Sims, Lynn Gumpert and Max Protecht.
This is the Catskill Artist’s thirteenth New York City solo show.
