Amos Eno Gallery is proud to announce the winner of our solo show contest Wei-Hui Hsu. A jury of artists selected her from almost a hundred applications from across North America to have a one month solo show at Amos Eno Gallery. Her show will run from July 25th until August 16th with a reception for the artist on July 26th from 4-6 p.m.

Wei-Hui Hsu makes full-scale installations and mixed-media pieces that present layers of contradiction and vulnerability. She creates spaces using her body in which the end product, like the body, is marked with boundaries between the internal and external.

Her primary material for this exhibition will be hundreds of store bought facial masks for cosmetic maintenance. She transforms the twisted, wrinkled, and screaming expression of the mask into the frozen gesture of her potential fear and struggle. The stiffened material expresses a kind of pain and anxiety under the appearance of beauty. She uses the masks to make life-sized replicas of dresses, purses, and high heel shoes. She stiffens the facial masks, making them fragile, vulnerable, figuratively attractive, and skin-like.

With photography, she uses her own body to have conversations with her mask sculptures as a kind of camouflage. These becomes performative acts that cannot escape the awareness of the male gaze. These acts are complicated as she plays both male and female roles, and the gestures that are left behind give us windows into layers of fetish and voyeur.

Wei-Hui Hsu was born in Taoyuan, Taiwan. She received her BFA degree with a major in painting from National Hsin-Chu University of Education in Taiwan. She came to the United States in 2004 and received her MA degree in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Later, she received her MFA degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Currently she lives and works in New York. Her work has been exhibited at alternative spaces, galleries, and museums in Taiwan, Korea, Canada, and the United States.
