530 W 25th StAmos Eno Gallery is pleased to present Community of Hope, a collaboration between the gallery, Community Works, and the student-artists of the Frederick Douglas Academy II in Harlem, led by acclaimed artist M. Scott Johnson. The show will run from June 26-July 21. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday June 24th from 6-8pm.
Community Works is a leading arts-education organization founded in 1990, with the mission to build bridges between diverse cultures and neighborhoods by using the arts as a tool for social and personal change and sharing community stories that connect us all. The organization currently serves over 300,000 people throughout NYC each year through acclaimed performances, workshops and exhibitions.
Frederick Douglas Academy II is the offspring of the successful Frederick Douglas Academy, a school established by the charismatic educator, Lorraine Monroe. The school, which serves grades 6-12, is one of a number of successful Frederick Douglas academies in New York City dedicated to preparing students for competitive colleges and universities through rigorous academics and strict decorum. Students, who wear uniforms, recite the school's own "Scholars' Creed" and are expected to abide by a code of conduct. Enrichment opportunities are hallmarks of the program. They include an African studies program, a museum project, an arts program carried out in association with Lincoln Center, a "young ambassadors" student exchange program, and annual college tours.
