Cuneo: requiem

March 1, 2006- March 25, 2006

Anthony Cuneo

Amos Eno Gallery

530 W 25th St

Anthony Cuneo’s requiem is an installation of photographs dealing with the experience of cancer, endured not only by the victim of the disease, but by the family who endures and witnesses suffering. Striking and rich with color, Cuneo’s suites of portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes speak to one another from different interpretations of the intangibility of grief, as well as the physicality of cancer’s caustic trajectory. These haunting images strike the viewer with the irrational co-existence of ugliness and beauty.

Despite the ominous context, requiem is just as much about life as it is about death. It discovers unexpected courage and grace despite indescribable pain and fear. It explores the quiet perseverance of those who continue to metabolize the experience of loss, surviving amid an abiding absence. These images describe the poignant paradox of what is gone and what is left behind. Without self-pity, Cuneo has created sets of images that dance together like movements in a string quartet. The painful progression of illness and death is universal, something that all human beings go through at some point, as individuals, friends, and family members. Rather than a declaration of personal pain, Anthony Cuneo’s requiem is a stirring and intimate meditation on human suffering.

Anthony Cuneo received both his BFA and MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and has exhibited nationally since 1985. Currently the Art Department Chair at the Montclair-Kimberley Academy, Cuneo is active as a painter and photographer.
