Free Rein
July 24, 2007- August 18, 2007
Reception: July 26, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
530 W 25th St
A collection of works by the recent graduates and others currently enrolled
in the Masters of Fine Arts Program at Montclair State University
"Free Rein" brings together the diverse and multi-disciplinary talents
of the emerging artists contained within one of New Jersey's most
respected fine arts programs. The title refers not only to the range in
medium and scope of the work included in the exhibit, but also the
artists' own ability in connecting to what inspires their work; free from
restraint.
Elizabeth Sowell-Zakâ's digital photograph, "Journey: A We-ord
Traveler", from her body of work, "Journey", and
Martha Kelshawâ's
gouache painting, "I Pledge Allegiance", offer an open-ended visual
experience within a social and political context.
Suzanne Russoâ's
paintings and
Jamie Evans' sculptural masses emphasize and push the limits
of the raw materials that contain their work; the means as an inspiration to
the end. Personal experience is the foundation and motivation in the
paintings of
Janet Rente,
Pierre McGuffie,
Jonathan Baretz, and Connor
Goodman. Views that interconnect different social strata or challenge
political agenda are represented in the action-figure-focused sculptures of
Owen Oertling, drawing of
Linda Talaga, and video studies of Linda
Koenemund. Within the framework of space and time integrated with the
physical environment,
Jamie Allen,
Scott Beil,
Tracie Fracasso,
Ahni Fruger,
Sam Knapp and
Saraivy Orench-Reinat present their artistic exploration with
connective or interior intersections in materials and questions of
relativity.
