Reception: May 6, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Mimi Oritsky has often painted from an aerial perspective, capturing the vast expanse of air flowing between herself and the landscape. With this group of oils on linen, Oritsky shifts from the aerial perspective. These images are scenes observed from the AVÉ, a fast moving train that runs through southern Spain. Still, she remains above the view, watching the air contain itself within the pre-defined parameters of space.
Oritsky explores a fixed gaze on a section of stationary landscape observed from a perspective that never stands still and is gone within seconds. With layers of paint both built up and scraped away, each piece creates a space structured by light and a surface marked by the rhythm of moving air. Less abstract than much of Oritsky’s earlier work, these windows onto a traveling world make the viewer feel as if the landscape is pausing for just a moment to be admired, before racing off into the distance.
Mimi Oritsky received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has exhibited extensively in the United States and her work is represented in numerous public and private collections. This is her tenth solo show in New York.
