Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present
Mikyung Kimıs second solo
exhibition titled ³before the tree was tree², on view from January 9
through February 6, 2007. A reception for the artist will be held on
Thursday January 11, from 6pm-8pm.
³before the tree was tree² is an exhibition of oil and wax paintings on
linen. These are delicate yet incredibly lush abstract images of
geometric forms occupying the picture plane. Outwardly, these paintings
are subtle meditations on color and space. Upon closer inspection, you
see a translucent skin that provides a tactile presence for the tiny,
elegant lines that create these forms. Layer upon meticulous layer of
paint produces an evolution of stunning color making ³before the tree
was tree²a gorgeous, sensual experience.
Kimıs geometric abstracts act as a conceptual map for human thoughts
and feelings. Each section of color represents the artistıs experience
of touching the canvas and her emotional response to it. Similarly,
when she walks down the street, she looks at strangers and tries to
imagine how they think and feel. Kimıs paintings are a visual
interpretation of how these thoughts and feelings have the potential to
meet up with each other. Her work is informed by ideas of connecting
these thoughts just as streets are connected with the capability of
going anywhere.
The experience of creating these works is a corporeal one for Kim. Her
process involves touching along with thinking and seeing. Says Kim
³When I work on the surface of my painting and apply the colorI feel
the surface of my painting and I feel the connection between my hand
and my mind.²
