André Schlechtriem Contemporary is pleased to announce “Close To Me”, an
exhibition of recent paintings by Leipzig artist
Rosa Loy.
The title “Close to me“ is an epithet to
Rosa Loy’s method of work, strategy
and her philosophy. Loy’s representational paintings portray women often as
twins or even Doppelgangers - reflections of her own, and of collective
womanhood - as workers in their environment; working in their factories and
in their fields, frequently seen during a break.
She identifies herself as a woman rooted in the German culture. The German
gender specific word for female worker, “Arbeiterin”, is an essential part of
her perceived identity. Born and raised in the former socialist GDR, she holds
the belief that women and men are equal, although very different in their
ways of understanding and shaping the world. Loy explores and researches
what she describes as old and sometimes ancient “traditions of female
knowledge” adding that they are not to found among the “Masculine
Libraries”.
Loy’s landscapes are the dwelling and stage for her protagonists, referencing
the nature she is surrounded with in Saxony as well as a color range that is
dependant on the seasons changing light observed on her walks from house
to studio. The animal creatures that populate her canvases give these
paintings a mythological air at times as they guard and accompany her female
pairs; architectural elements - sparsely featured in the paintings - are abstract
compositional elements with which Loy begins the construction of her
imagery. In her most recent work, these abstractions become more obvious
and self-sustaining: abstract color fields, welcome the women as visitors on a
stay.
Rosa Loy’s work starts with the molecule, the smallest, the private part,
in order to comment on the large-scale scenario.
“To paint and process tragedy, would be the easy way” says Loy, “as much as
[it would be] from the art historian’s point of view.” “Much harder it is”, she
argues, “to deal with the realm of ideas and ideals… things that never lose
meaning, nor are they ever tragically blurred or blown-up.“
This is
Rosa Loy’s second solo show in New York City; her first was “9 Wege”
at David Zwirner Gallery in 2006. Loy has had recent solo exhibitions at the
Kunstverein Oldenburg, Germany and the Städtische Museen Zwickau,
Germany among others. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition
On Sunday, May 11th, at 7pm, the Goethe Institute New York will present an
artist talk with German artists and partners
Rosa Loy and Neo Rauch for
Show/ Tell 08. The two painters from the renowned New Leipzig School will
meet the New York-based curator/writer couple Sabine Russ and Gregory
Volk to discuss which challenges, opportunities and problems might arise as a
result of living and working in the same field. What kind of inspiration and
impulses does their partnership provide for both of them?
