Pádraig Timoney

Andrew Kreps Gallery

525 W 22nd St

Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to present Golarithm, Pádraig Timoney's debut solo exhibition in New York. Born in Derry, Northern Ireland and based in Naples, Timoney's work encompasses a variety of platforms through his use of differing media and materials. In Golarithm, Timoney will exhibit paintings and photography.

Since the late 1980's Timoney has challenged his audiences by presenting a diverse group of works without an easily apparent bond. Refusing to stagnate in a particular genre, Timoney's practice sometimes gives the illusion that one could be viewing a group show rather than a solo exhibition. Timoney has consistently drawn his ideas from his personal experiences, which result in subject matter with intermingling themes ranging from the charged political atmosphere of his youth to the idyllic surroundings of his Mediterranean home.

The theme of pluralism and its narratives come to life through Timoney's work once again in Golarithm, the title of which is an anagram of both algorithm and logarithm; Algorithm being process and logarithm being relationality between terms, Golarithm "explains" the operation of the movements in and between the works in the show. The diptych "Stari Most" created using a gravitational transfer process, depicts the Old Bridge at Mostar, a 16th century Bosnian bridge famous for its destruction by Croat Nationalists owing to its iconic status during the Bosnian War. In the painting "Capo Miseno", Timoney calls upon his new found home in Italy with an abstracted image of a promontory located in the northwest bay of Naples.

This continuity of disparate style and process proceeds through the exhibition with other works such as the aptly titled work "Lens Cap", a flatly painted landscape-colored disk, to a more spontaneous, almost watercolor-like painting of a hydrangea bush. It is with these stark shifts that offer the audience the opportunity to begin to unravel the artist's complex narrative.
