Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to present In a Foreign Land In a Foreign Town, Uwe Henneken's debut exhibition in New York. Henneken is currently exhibiting at The Breeder in Athens, and will have a show in September at Giti Nourbakhsch, Berlin, and in October at Gisela Capitain in Cologne. In a Foreign Land In a Foreign Town includes new paintings by the Berlin-based artist, as well as a bronze sculpture.

Henneken's work reflects upon the human condition; the search for meaning and fear of the unknown. When the work includes a figure it is placed in the painting as an awkward interloper, searching or confused. Because Henneken moves between and imitates different styles of painting, the figures are forced to grapple with the ever changing art-historical backdrops that surround them, leaving the viewer to consider what is aesthetically good, and contemplate the cyclical movement of cultural trends.

In Vanguard #31 (all works 2006), Henneken has altered a secondhand painting. The original painter created a safe atmosphere which Henneken has disrupted by adding a colorful face peeking over a mountain in the background (this character is a reoccurring theme in Henneken's work). The character surveys the idyllic landscape and disturbs it with the contrasting style in which it is painted. Bowing and Parting depicts a painting within a painting. It depicts an old man reaching for a trompe l'oiel branch in the depicted framed landscape. Like most of Henneken's characters, this old man, painted in oddly mismatched colors, is lost and futiley searching.
