AnnaKustera presents “CutAway,” a group exhibition that deals with the idea of narrative interruption. The work of the four artists featured share a cinematic quality analogous to the concept of filmic “cutaways,” or insertions of action or still images that help to condense or better explicate the dominant subject at issue. Figurative imagery—especially that of the body—is broken down, obscured, split or extracted altogether, revealing the more intricate and complex base of the imagery. “CutAway” features paintings by British artist Rachel Howard, works on paper by Danish artist Jasper Sebastian Stürup, performance-based photography and collages by Croatian artist Vlatka Horvat, and a large sculptural mixed-media installation by New York-based Gandalf Gaván.
