547 W 27th StAperture Gallery is pleased to announce concurrent exhibitions featuring two very different approaches to photography.
Coinciding with the release of his latest book, Ten Series/106 Photographs (Aperture, November 2007), we are excited to announce the first major solo exhibition in the United States of Australian photographer, Matthew Sleeth. Working in series, Sleeth conveys a sharp view of the contemporary world structured around details of everyday life, in line with the work of Ed Ruscha. His saturated color palette and unorthodox visual style also recalls Lars Tunbjork. Topics include: tagged trees, views of Mount Fuji, fire extinguishers and abandoned umbrellas.
In Almost Every Picture presents an idiosyncratic collection of found images from the three volumes of the cult classic book series of the same title edited by Erik Kessels. Fascinated by vernacular photography, Kessels, Dutch curator, author and creative director of the advertising agency, KesselsKramer, brings a new life to these images and the touching stories they hold through his publications. These fascinating series include a Spanish woman photographed by her husband between 1956 and 1968; sisters who dress alike taken in Europe during the 1940s; photographs taken by a taxi driver of his taxi and passenger at different “holiday spot” locations.
