In a landmark event for the New York and Asian contemporary art communities, Arario Gallery—with branches in Cheonan and Seoul, Korea, and Beijing, China—will open a fourth gallery in New York City’s Chelsea gallery district on November 10, 2007. Presenting work by world-renowned and emerging Asian contemporary artists, with a focus on China, India, and Korea, Arario Gallery has proven itself a leader in the field, mounting major surveys like Hungry God – Indian Contemporary Art and Absolute Images – Chinese Contemporary Art and Zeitgeist, both benchmarks in exhibitions devoted to the work of Asian artists. With its new space in New York, Arario Gallery will present the explosive creative spirit of Asia that is being celebrated in many of the artists’ home countries to a Western audience through similarly significant group and solo exhibitions. Located at 521 West 25th Street, Second Floor with a dedicated street-front entrance, Arario Gallery New York is designed by acclaimed contemporary architect David Adjaye. The gallery’s inaugural exhibition Absolute Images II will be on view from November 10, 2007 through January 13, 2008, Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

With approximately 7,000 square feet of exhibition space, the New York branch of Arario Gallery is expected to be among the largest commercial galleries in New York City upon completion. The gallery will consist of two main exhibition spaces: a larger space devoted to longer-running exhibitions of established artists from China, India and Korea and a second, smaller project space featuring emerging and newly-discovered artists, all presented to further Arario Gallery’s goal of building a cultural and educational bridge between east and west through the works of Asia’s greatest contemporary artists.

Absolute Images II, a group exhibition featuring the gallery’s major Chinese avant-garde artists, is curated by Arario Gallery’s Executive Director, Cheagab Yun, and follows in the footsteps of the original Absolute Images. This second incarnation, however, features several artists in addition to the original nine, almost all of whom are creating new works for this inaugural exhibition in New York. Participating artists are: Fang Lijun, Ji Dachun, Liu Jianhua, Sui Jianguo, Wang Du, Yang Shaobin, Yue Minjun, Zeng Hao, Wang Guangyi, Zhou Tiehai, and Zhang Xiaogang. Drawing from the vast political, economic, social, artistic and cultural shifts that have shaped the last several decades globally, and particularly in China where socialism and capitalism conflict yet coexist daily, these artists explore the scars and triumphs of the 20th century to which they have all been witnesses.

Opening in January 2008, will be new works by sculptor Hyungkoo Lee, who represented the Republic of Korea at the 52nd Venice Biennale with his widely-acclaimed Animatus series. In March, Arario Gallery New York will present two solo exhibitions: the first, which will occupy the main gallery, will feature the work of Indian artist, Tallur L.N., while in the Project Space, Korean artist Yong-Baek Lee will have new work on view.

Arario Gallery New York is designed by David Adjaye, principal of Adjaye Associates, a celebrated London-based Tanzanian architect who has received international acclaim for diverse projects including the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, and the pavilion commissioned by T-B A21 for Olafur Eliasson’s ‘Your Black Horizon’ Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. His Idea Store in London was nominated for the 2006 Stirling Prize, and his collaborative installation with Chris Ofili ‘The Upper Room’ is in the collection of the Tate Britain. Among Adjaye Associates’ other upcoming projects are the Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver and Rivington Place, the first new arts centre to be built in London in 40 years.
