Arario Gallery New York is pleased to present Animatuseum, Hyungkoo Lee’s first solo exhibition in the United States. The show will feature a number of anthropomorphic skeletal sculptures and drawings from the Animatus series, which was also shown at the Korean Pavilion of the 2007 Venice Biennale. The exhibition will be on view from March 6 through April 19, 2008, and a reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on March 6 from 6-8 pm.

Approaching his work from a scientific standpoint, Hyungkoo Lee creates playful yet remarkably realistic reconstructions of skeletons resembling familiar cartoon characters like Donald Duck or Tom and Jerry. The works begin as meticulously rendered drawings that are reminiscent of classical naturalist studies. They are then constructed as sculptures in Hyungkoo’s laboratory-like studio from resin casts and metal beams before being arranged in dramatically lit encounters throughout the gallery space. Animatuseum will feature, among others, a skeletal coyote ( Canis Latrans Animatus, 2005-06) in pursuit of a roadrunner ( Geococcyx Animatus, 2005-06) a trio of ducklings ( Anis Animatus L, H and D, 2006) a leaping rabbit ( Lepus Animatus, 2005-06) and a poised, grinning cat ( Felis Catus Animatus, 2006).

Hyungkoo Lee lives and works in Seoul, Korea. He earned his B.F.A from Hong-ik University, Seoul, Korea and his M.F.A from Yale University, New Haven (USA). In 2007, he was selected as his country’s representative for The Korean Pavilion of the 52nd Venice Biennale. He will have a solo exhibition at The Natural History Museum in Basel, Switzerland opening in June 2008, for the museum’s first ambitious contemporary art project. Previously, his work had been exhibited in Korea with solo shows at the Sungkok Art Museum in Seoul (2004) and at Arario Gallery in Cheonan (2006). He also participated in international group exhibitions at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin (2006) and at Union Project in London (2006). He was awarded a scholarship from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, USA in 2002.
