Excerpt from Artist’s Statement:
For centuries poets, artists and philosophers have recognized color’s power. Each color carries with it a world of memories and emotions both cultural and personal. Aristotle actually felt that it was dangerous drug while Roland Barthes called it “a kind of bliss”. Color is visual opium. It transports us. Our experience with color has a universal element to it but ultimately it is a subjective experience. Scientists for years have known that there is a universal response to colors. Red excites us. Blue calms us down. Orange makes us hungry. And so on. But, the emotions and memories we associate with colors, whether they be conscious or unconscious, stain the world we see. Blue might calm us down but it will also cause us to respond on a more intimate level. A certain shade of blue might remind us of the color of the kitchen floor when we were small children. Depending on our experience in that kitchen it could cause us great joy, sadness or remorse. The sensation of that color can make us feel that warm spot in our bellies where good memories live or in the chamber of our hearts that feels the echo of past fear.
