Suh Yong was born in Seoul in 1962. After graduating from Seoul National University, having majored in Oriental Painting, he moved to China in August 1992. He Studied Pan Hwa, print making, at the central Academy of Fine Arts and received his Master’s degree there in 1996. He visited the ancient city of Dunhuang in March of 1997 and spent the next seven years trying to get to the heart of its famous murals.
Suh Yong obtained his Ph.D. from Lazhou University (Dunhuang Studies).
Suh Yong’s works are inspired by the Buddhist murals adorning the historic and ancient cave-temples near the town of Dunhuang, a town in Chinese Central Asia. To
Suh Yong, Dunhuang is a place of social and historical significance that also provides a profound sense of tranquility.
Suh Yong first visited Dunhuang early in his career in hopes of discovering the truths of existentialism. Since then,
Suh Yong has made capturing the beauty and magnificence of the murals to be the main objective of his career. Through the reproduction of the murals,
Suh Yong achieves something new by dissecting and studying the original works and using what he learned from this to create a “second original” with a whole new set of unique characteristics. Although the subject matter of the Dunhuang murals are Buddhist,
Suh Yong’s works are not intended to extend the meanings of any religion. Instead, the works are an expression of his imagination without any specific intent, unlike religious works.
Suh Yong’s works should be viewed in a different light from the actual murals because his works are impacted by modern day society and is considered contemporary art. Unlike a mural, which is created for the public on public property,
Suh Yong’s works are the result of artistic collaboration. His works are created on canvas and may involve the combination of more than one original into a new piece of work.
