ARTGATE Gallery has the privilege to be one of the only few galleries outside of North Korea permitted to sell
art and represent individual artist from North Korea. We are pleased to announce "The Beautiful Promise", our
first collective exhibition of North Korean paintings from different artists.
North Korea is one of the world's most hermit countries. Under its government's dictatorship, most artists have
very little contact with the outside world. The form of art is therefore considered very pure. North Korean artists,
like any other citizen, follow the country's political philosophy. Because of the government's censorship, they are
rarely influenced by outside politics or the contemporary art trends, and are able to develop their own techniques
and the use of colors in an original style.
The paintings exhibited include sceneries of nature such as mount Baek Du, the highest and the most beautiful
mountain in North Korea, portraits and ordinary citizen's gathering and celebration. These pieces of artwork
allow us to catch glimpses of North Korea and better understand the lives and thoughts of its people. The serenity
and the stillness in the artworks reveal ordinary citizens' yearning and hope of peace and tranquility. Through this
exhibition, we hope to share our understanding of North Korea, and the universal theme of hope of peace with
New York City and the world.
