Laurel Lueders exhibits in Dead Endless multi-layered archival digital photographs printed on handmade watercolor paper. The artist’s pictorial landscape consists of fragmented human figures, bits of handmade textiles, suspended objects, and interludes of space. A variety of textures and surface patterns emerge from overlapped elements such as building remnants, crumbling debris, old cracked walls, and details from archeological sites.
These many-layered works reflect not only the artist’s person, most often its internal aspects, but also reflect upon public events, too often disturbing. Lueders believes that the consequences of misled political policies, inescapable as they are, invade and affect our collective psyche. By means of metaphor, her figures and layered details often amount to subliminal protest, provoking a deep emotional response that leads to an open dialogue.
The personal iconography on exhibit involves dismay at the policies, both foreign and domestic, of the current administration, in particular at those in the Middle East. Beyond specific references to contemporary events such as warfare in Afghanistan or Iraq, Lueder’s art expresses the tragic realities of our violent history in general.
