Atlantic Gallery is proud to announce SPINCYCLE, an exhibition of new paintings and pen and ink drawings by
Andrea Pluhar from November 13th to December 1st, 2007. There will be an opening reception Tuesday, November 13th from 6 to 8pm. This Pluhar’s 4th (solo) exhibition with the gallery.
In the past 2 years Pluhar’s subject matter has been the interplay between the figures she invents. Her characters vary in form, weight and elasticity, but Pluhar’s sturdy knowledge of skeletal anatomy allows her to distort figures with such grace that they do not seem disfigured. Neither caricature nor mannered, Pluhar’s people manage to avoid classification through the genuine and quiet exchange we witness taking place in each picture.
In Spincycle there has been a significant shift from Pluhar’s earlier work. The landscape has not only changed, it has disappeared entirely. The artist sends her figures aloft, pulls them across the picture plane and swirls them to the center. The elimination of a horizon line suggests not only emotional turbulence, but it also gives the artist’s whiplash line room to move. These almost uniformly naked figures are suspended in mid air against bright white, blue, and gold backgrounds where they reach for, clasp and lose each other.
Pluhar’s imagery is inspired by events and relationships unfolding in daily life. Among visual influences, the artist cites Durer and Schiele for line, Degas and Vuillard for color, and Goya and Lucien Freud for intensity.
Andrea Pluhar was born in Boston and raised in New York City and New England. She studied Classics at Vassar during which time she attended the Art Student League, and received BA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Pluhar shows in New York and Cape Cod. Her work is in the permanent collection of Cape Cod Museum of Art, as well as in many private collections.
