BUIA Gallery is pleased to present Death by Misadventure, the debut solo
exhibition of Cooper Union graduate
Matt Jones. Obsessed with his own
personal journey and interactions with the closely-knit community that
surrounds him and ascribing somewhat mockingly to the artist as hero myth,
Jones' multiple contemporaneous projects involving painting, photography,
video, and installation, denote his desire to conquer, critique, negotiate,
and play with the world around him. And while incredibly human and
intellectual issues provide the subject matter for his work, Jones, not
unlike Martin Kippenberger, retains an optimistic, energetic, and wittily
critical attitude- implementing a palette of bold reds, yellows, blues, and
blacks against clean white, an effusive expressionist syle, and a fluidity
of production contiguous with his endless curiosity and investigation. It
has been said, in effect, that this sort of intensity of production and
detachment from the perfection of the old masters and the unrealistic
idealism of the '60s reveals an allegiance with the hands on relatively
egalitarian ethos of the Punk movement of the '80s or the Pop Art- Warhol,
Polke, Picabia, etc...- rejection of traditionally conceived High Art. It
is not, however, to say that Jones' work is unconsidered, haphazard, or
capricious, for that would be a grave error. Jones' work, instead, is
aggressively conceptual and with vigor, attitude, and decision manages to
encapsulate larger truths in the form of paired down figural gestures- think
here to a flare of Basquiat's schematic figures, a touch of Goya
appropriation, the Kippenberger/Krebber disregard of 'error,' the Barry
McGee/Steve Powers humor with a veer towards a Warholian palette and you
will start to envision the work.
Matt Jones is a graduate of The Cooper Union and a two year gallery artist.
His debut two-person exhibition in the spring of 2005 with Kadar Brock
received praise in The New York Times by Roberta Smith as well as a fervent
reaction by Charlie Finch on Artnet.com. Jones was also a stand out in the
NBC show at the gallery in fall of 2005. Shortly thereafter, he teamed up
with fellow gallery artist Daniel Joseph for a great performance at Artists'
Space in December. We are excited to start off the season with
Matt Jones'
greatly anticipated debut solo show.
