BUIA Gallery is pleased to present I Don’t Even Have to Ask, I Already Know, a solo exhibition by Brooklyn based artist Daniel Joseph. The centerpiece of the show is a film made up of interviews with random figures and friends that have crossed the artist’s path in the last year. This piece, is vol.#1 in a life long series. There are three questions posed to all: “What is your name and title?” “When is the last time you cried and why?” And finally, “Why do you do what you do?” The flood of answers, paintings, sculptures, photos, scrawlings etc., informed by this simple study of what makes us all human comprises the rest of the exhibition. This is a show to justify long faith and illuminate all of our different versions of truth.

"I don’t think Mr. Joseph believes in silent retreats. Instead of stripping things bare he would rather dive into the mess. His collages have a shredded beauty, made out of layers and layers, drizzled with symbols. He piles things on and leaves heavy footprints. He refuses to believe it’s too late for love or that it comes from somewhere above our heads in some kind of refined, expensive air. He wants us to scream and find to each other through the tatters and chatter.

Somewhere down here, deep in the mess, are fresh moments, orgasms, friendship and the lurching laugh-cry you used to get when you laid on the front lawn and looked at the sky. These pieces drag you through all the trash as if you were pulled along by a loving arm that won’t let go. Here are Daniel Joseph’s bouys –swim to one and signal to someone else that you are in love." – Mike Albo for the artist.

Daniel Joseph’s art consists of painting, writing, performing, acting, filmmaking, and music. He has shown internationally and in New York- from performances at the Weimer national theater to group shows at Deitch Projects. He was one of the main collaborators of the well-received FOREST Project directed by Brock Enright and Ivan Hurzeler this past February. His paintings and writings have been published numerous times in various books and art magazines such as Heavy and K48 with other press credits including The New York Times and The Village Voice. Joseph is also co-founder of the Manipulationist movement and a lifetime member of the Free-Willsons. Daniel Joseph is lead singer in one of his many side project- the very uncomfortable band PINK SOCK. The rest is fake history.
