BUIA Gallery is pleased to announce Look into the Crystals, the debut solo exhibition of New York based artist Jason Tomme.

Jason Tomme’s work revolves around the concept of constellation. Whether consisting of the writing on a bathroom wall, the particular organization of text on a page, or the stars, constellations are comprised of many elements floating in a void. Tomme navigates this space and its placelessness, examining the orientation of these parts and the relationships between them, the artist and the viewer. He then determines and depicts this conceptual space, plotting it as singular points. This practice results in a certain sense of vertigo, a cycle of ongoing questioning, analysis, and conclusion, while looking at the essence of things.

In "Look into the Crystals," Jason Tomme presents a miniature monument to his ‘ongoing mantra’ Plus One Minus One- a simplification of the universe down to a basic binary code reflecting the push and pull of energy and the underlying duality of existence that leads to a constant state of being or nothingness. Continuing the idea of the constellation, but with a turn toward contemporary culture, the Infinite band names project consists of ninety-nine hypothetical band names applied meticulously with black paint over gold leaf on two stark white panels. Looking back into history, Tomme presents another series of paintings depicting the flat, blank void or wall space behind a sitter in classical portraiture. Here the wall space, the cracks, and the emptiness become the subject in a reversal of tradition, underlining once again the duality of existence.

Jason Tomme makes his work about the subtleties that make up our world. He recognizes the smallest building blocks of life, painting, ideas, and things. Where some go out, he goes in.

Jason Tomme received his BFA in Visual Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was awarded the Devos Fine Art Scholarship. He then received his MFA in Painting from Yale University. Jason has participated in exhibitions in Las Vegas and New Haven as well as two previous exhibitions at BUIA.
