Curated by Becky Smith, Esme Watanabe & Erica Samuels

In the office: Wunderkammer featuring work by Tanyth Berkeley, Ben Blatt, Tim Mensching, and Thomas Trosch

Featuring the work of nearly 20 contemporary artists, "Trifecta" is a composition of 3 shows in 1. Each show-within-a-show is curated by a member of the Bellwether staff and reveals three uniquely different tastes in contemporary art.

In the front gallery, Erica Samuels assembles works on paper, sculpture and photographs in the vein of minimalism, but with a contemporary edge to expand on the debate of a style that was never quite clearly defined. Employing materials like neon, synthetic flowers, beeswax and vintage negatives, the works included in Meta-Minimal are about materiality and form (reduced geometries), artistic labor and the impact of Duchamp and Johns.

In the rear gallery, Esme Watanabe has compiled work by 12 artists in a show titled "Psychic Reality." In this exhibition, artists act as soothsayers or mediums, channeling and revealing what Donald Kuspit calls “the tension that underlies the creative process.” The work on view shows a reality that is simultaneously familiar yet uncanny, what in German is termed unheimlich.

In "Hysterical Realism," Becky Smith curates an exhibition that gives figure painting a kick in the ass. Using a vocabulary rooted in the past, Paul Green, Sas Christian and Julian Trigo aspire to reveal what is often overlooked in much of contemporary art, that is, the capacity to render emotion in a desensitized world without being sentimental. Blurring the barriers of high and low art, opting for craft over context, Smith's assembly is steeped with guilty pleasure.
