Bespoke Gallery is pleased to present XIV, a series of color and black and white photographs by Nick Haymes.
Haymes's photographs are part of an ongoing series which explores the artist's role in, and relationship with his family. In XIV, Haymes's photographs portray his seven year old step-son at a critical stage in his physical and emotional
development while the photographer explores the relatively new undertaking
and experience of fatherhood. The photographs examine the intimacy, responsibility and temporal relationship between family and self.
In the vein of Lee Friedlander's photographs which address the subject of family, Haymes's work depicts specific and simple spaces, his son both in the
pool and in the bath -- and fleeting moments in time and physicality -- that, aggregated, define the strength and integrity of familial bonds. As in
Friedlander's work, while the viewer witnesses this intimate relationship from an outsider's perspective, the struggle, purity and innocence of the moment is
palpable, if not fleeting. The photographs evoke Haymes's -- and encourage the viewer's -- retrospective and wistful contemplation of life's passage
through stages of innocence, separation, loss and mortality.
Born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England in 1969, Haymes moved from London in 2000 to New York, where he currently works and lives. XIV is Haymes's first
solo show in New York. Haymes's work has been presented in a solo exhibit at Fenix Gallery in Moscow in 2003 and in a group show at Shooting Gallery in San
Francisco in 2004. Haymes's photographs have been and are featured in various magazines.
Closing Reception for the artist: Thursday, February 23rd from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
