The Days
January 29, 2008- February 23, 2008
Reception: January 31, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
530 W 25th St
An exhibition of recent paintings of
Nancy Beal will be on view at the
Blue Mountain Gallery from January 29 to February 23, 2008.
Nancy Beal’s work is notable for capturing the dazzle of a summer day in large on-site paintings. Lush foreground gardens are set in spacious landscapes. The gesture of brushstroke, abundant light and the dance of paint combine in dynamic balance. A fullness of detail and breadth of spirit convey the radiance of the days.
“She makes a theatrical event out of a garden blooming in summer, convincing us of the authenticity of her outlook by sheer detail and design.” -Gerrit Henry
“It is the pictorial directness that impresses.” -Lawrence Campbell, Art News
“By tending many of the gardens she paints,
Nancy Beal insists upon an identity between gardening and painting. In almost extravagant display, she thrusts a clump of flowers into a highly developed foreground. “Related” is the key word. Her paintings are about the interconnections between the stem and flower structures set against the vista of an expansive landscape.” -David Matlock
Ms. Beal is a founding member of two galleries and has had 14 one-person shows, 7 in New York City. She has had residencies in Spain, Cornwall England, Yaddo, VCCA, the Millay Colony and an “America the Beautiful Grant” in New York State. She paints in her gardens in Columbia County and lives and teaches in New York City.
