Closing Down

Bortolami Dayan is proud to announce its inaugural exhibition at its new gallery space at 510 West
25th Street. “Closing Down” presents a group of artists whose work explores inevitable contradictions
and ironies. Using a variety of media, these artists question our sense of virtuosity and bring a level
of cynicism, sarcasm and irreverence to the fore. While the artists’ works are clearly multidimensional
and multilayered, what they share are the almost paradoxical references in their exploration of
themes such as beauty vs. the grotesque, calm vs. chaos, verity vs. falsehood, good vs. evil, and life
vs. death. Ultimately the artists are presented with a contradiction of how to function convincingly
within the confines of an art system in which all avenues of escape appear foreclosed. The artists’
works in this exhibition reflect this quandary. Their subversive, incisive and often humorous
commentaries on our contemporary world suggest that they are seemingly finding some solutions
while presenting new questions of their own.
The artists in the exhibition include:
Glenn Brown,
Urs Fischer,
Sylvie Fleury,
Piero Golia, Damien
Hirst,
Richard Hughes,
Tim Noble & Sue Webster,
