Bortolami Dayan is proud to present Hope Atherton’s first solo exhibition in New York. Raised on a farm in Virginia, Atherton infuses her work with a sense of twisted nature. Her interest in the supernatural, mysticism, and the grotesque contribute to her unique mystical surrealism. Atherton’s use of chiaroscuro in her paintings compel us to explore the many layers of her world. At first glance, the works can appear abstract. However, with closer examination obscure yet poignant representational elements emerge. Atherton’s paintings combine the haziness and ethereality of a dream or a nightmare with spiritual and apocalyptic references. When contemplating her canvases, one can never comfortably assess whether what we see is human, alien, inanimate or divine.

Atherton first created sculptural assemblages referencing pagan ritual objects and exploring the repercussions of tampering with common mythologies. Building on her pictorial investigations into notions of universal experience, mythology, and abstract religion, Atherton's current body of work draws from hundreds of photographs she took of seemingly disparate sources, from carnivals to cathedrals. Through her mesmerizing brushstrokes and use of light, the artist invites the viewer to enter a dreamlike psychological state where she interprets these earthly images while evoking the subconscious, spirituality and magic.

Hope Atherton was born in Warrenton, Virginia in 1974 and currently lives and works in New York City. Her work has been exhibited in the Greater New York 2005 exhibition at PS1. She has had solo exhibitions with Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone in Rome, and Patrick Painter Gallery in Los Angeles.
