Art historian Walter Spink says of Brooks’ work, “Even when Aaron paints something light– a noon-day sun or flowers– it feels dark. He manages to use bright color and still the image projects the hum of inevitable sadness. His paintings are motivated by meaning and metaphor. Each image is a mytho-psychological mindscape, projecting a host of heavy emotions… from fear, to gently padded grief, to hopeless resignation. Aaron’s special gift is presenting this doom with great visual beauty, making it strangely inviting.”
Painter Paul Manlove states that, “Brooks’ work is psychologically engaging while never sacrificing a complex, formal painting language in favor of simple, narrative illustration. He references a wide order of painters, styles and time periods, often assembled within the same image. You might find a representational figure reflecting Greek Classicism or German Expressionism juxtaposed with flat color shapes, reminiscent of Marsden Hartley in his Berlin period. His compression of different art influences into a single image is distinctly Post-Modern. Rather than seeming contrived, the mix is organic and honest, synthesizing into a unique painting voice.”
Brooks’ work has been exhibited in numerous one-person and group exhibitions including the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Maryland Federation of Art in Baltimore, Mesa Arts Center in Arizona and the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Brooks received his BFA degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and his MFA degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He also studied at Hunter College in New York City. He currently lives in Pennsylvania where he teaches art at several colleges and universities.
