IN & OUT
January 3, 2008- January 26, 2008
Reception: January 3, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
530 W 25th St
The
Bowery Gallery in Chelsea is pleased to present the first exhibition of recent paintings and drawing by
Ruth Bernard. The opening reception will take place January 3 from 5-8pm. Ms Bernard’s work is an expression of the act of painting and not a record of images.
As the title In & Out suggests, the work consists of still life and landscapes. It also represents work created in the studio and out of the studio. Despite the subject some of the landscapes were executed on location while some in the studio. The landscape paintings in this show are of the central Pennsylvania’s lower Susquehanna Valley of Lancaster county. The artist has had a long lasting interest in both landscapes and still life using these genres to suggest a world of confusion and excess, neither of order nor peace. This show marks a turning point in Bernard’s work; the use of the photo as a source of information and the return of the use of landscape.
Bernard’s work has been described as having a gem-like quality along with aggressive brush work and a fully loaded brush, the paintings makes for an exciting visual experience.
“The work is an expression of the act of painting not purely a recording of images. I often start my paintings in a place of unknowing and through the act of painting I discover the subject and search for the fundamental nature of the images in front of me.”
Ruth Bernard completed her education by earning an MFA at Queens College, NYC and has lived and taught art in central Pennsylvania for the past 18 years. She is represented by the
Bowery Gallery in New York City, the Lynden Gallery in Pennsylvania.
