The
Bowery Gallery is pleased to present Gael Mooney's second show at the gallery. The exhibition will feature oil paintings and pastels painted on site at two different locations in France.
For fifteen years, Gael Mooney has painted the interior of the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the traditional burial place of French monarchs, seeking to capture its myriad, elusive effects of light and space. This past year she also spent several months in Provence, painting the Chateau Noir and other scenes that inspired Cezanne over a century ago.
The artist says, "I am seeking to express the transparency of Gothic light and all that it signifies: weightlessness, change, transformation! I see the same qualities present in the ever-changing configuration of trees, rocks, and hills that make up the landscape surrounding the Chateau Noir. The challenge for me is not how to resist these changes, but how to remain open to them, to see what unexpected results they may uncover. What a joy and privilege it was to live and work in the place where Cezanne painted so many masterpieces, to breathe its atmosphere and light and ponder his example."
Jed Perl, writing for The New Republic, February 16, 2004, praised Mooney for her "delicately painted, prismatically colored impressions of the interior of the Basilica of Saint-Denis," citing her work among "the best shows that you can see in the galleries [this season]."
Mooney's work was featured in a solo exhibition at Grace Church in Manhattan in 2005 and has appeared in many exhibitions across the country. In 2006, Mooney was featured in a radio interview broadcast nationally on RTL Radio France.
