Working Process: Drawings and Fragments

"WORKING PROCESS – Drawings and Fragments" is
Mary Lou Schuck’s fourth show at
Bowery Gallery and demonstrates both her love for drawing and its importance in her work. This show consists almost entirely of drawings that develop a motif or subject matter through several stages and variations. Each piece examines form, line and tone in order to most completely convey her visual experience. They reveal her method of pursuing ideas and yet are graphic images in their own right.
Whether the drawings are quick sketches of a few light lines, or a heavily worked, dense network of tones, each shows both the struggle and the excitement of capturing and conveying visual perceptions. They are fragments of the working process, but also retain and communicate their own identity.
The subject matter is taken from Ms. Schuck’s immediate environment: self-portraits, landscapes and portraits of her mother, an Alzheimer’s patient, with whom she lives.
